Itinerary
The following was the itinerary for the 2004 Indigenous Heritage Festival:
Friday, October 15, 2004
- Orientation (6:30 pm - 7:00 pm) - Indigenous guests will be asked to attend a half-hour orientation session at the Evangelical Formosan Church located at 5405 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy. (W. Highway 192), Kissimmee, FL 34746. Phone: 321-231-5857.
- Welcome Dinner Party (7:00 pm - 9:00 pm) - A Banquet Room will be set up at the Evangelical Formosan Church in Kissimmee, Florida. Address: 5405 W. Irlo Bronson Memorial Hwy. (W. Highway 192), Building C, 2nd Floor, Kissimmee, FL 34746. Phone: 321-231-5857. A community-supported dinner party and mixer for our special guests.
- 7:00 pm-8:00 pm - Welcome and Presentation. Performances.
- 8:00 pm-9:00 pm - Dinner. Silent Auction. Door Prizes.
Saturday, October 16, 2004
This was the day for the event programs, including performances, exhibits, community interaction and workshops.
- Opening Ceremonies (10:00 am - 11:00 am) - Pegasus Ballroom in the first floor of the Student Union building at the University of Central Florida. Indigenous leaders, government officials, and the media were invited to participate in the opening ceremonies of the event.
- 10:00 am-10:05 am - Play the video of the Indigenous Heritage Festival promo. Welcome speech by organizer Eric Chen, President of the Taiwanese Students Association at UCF. Description of why his organization is involved with the event and why it is important to students at the University to have awareness of indigenous cultures.
- 10:05 am-10:10 am - Welcome speech by organizer Tony Coolidge, founder of ATAYAL. Case statement for the event read. Vision for the future of the event described.
- 10:10 am-10:15 am - Welcome speech by Orlando City Commissioner Betty T. Wyman. Proclamation by the Mayor of Orlando read. A welcome of guests to Central Florida.
- 10:15 am-10:20 am - Welcome speech by Florida Representative Sheri McInvale. A welcome of guests to Florida and a statement about the importance of indigenous culture to Floridians.
- 10:20 am-10:25 am - Welcome speech by Mr. Samuel Wu, Director, Taipei
Economic and Cultural Office in Miami. A welcome of the indigenous participants and a statement about the importance of indigenous culture to the world.
- 10:25 am-10:30 am - Acknowledgment of sponsors.
- 10:30 am-10:40 am - Ribbon cutting ceremony. Media photo opportunity.
- 10:40 am-10:55 am - Procession and introduction of indigenous participants. Media photo opportunity.
- Award Ceremonies (11:00 am - 11:30 am) - We presented the first annual Indigenous Heritage Awards, acknowledging organizations and individuals who have made a lasting difference for indigenous people and have forwarded indigenous issues worldwide. This event took place in the Pegasus Ballroom in the first floor of the Student Union building at the University of Central Florida.
- 11:00 am-11:05 am - Welcome speech and purpose of the Indigenous Heritage Awards.
- 11:05 am-11:30 am - Awards given with brief acceptance speeches.
- David DeHass - Indigenous Heritage Award for Leadership - Representative of the Board of Directors and an established leader of the Seminole Tribe of Florida.
- Marvin Couch - Indigenous Heritage Award for Philanthropy - Retired Florida legislator who contributed generously to make possible the creation of ATAYAL and the Indigenous Heritage Festival.
- Disney - Indigenous Heritage Award for Visual Media - Recognized for their portrayal of indigenous cultures in popular animated films, Brother Bear and Pocahantas.
- Cultural Survival Quarterly - Indigenous Heritage Award for Print Media - Publication dedicated to indigenous people and issues of the world.
- Tien, Kuei-Shih - Indigenous Heritage Award for Visual Arts - Photography documenting the Atayal facial tattoo culture in Taiwan.
- Thirza Defoe - Indigenous Heritage Award for Performing Arts - Accomplished performer and visual storyteller from the Ojibwe and Oneida tribes.
- nila northSun - Indigenous Heritage Award for Literature - Accomplished poet and storyteller from the Shoshone Native American culture.
- The Council for Indigenous Peoples, Executive Yuan, Taiwan ROC - Indigenous Heritage Award for Public Policy - The branch of the government of Taiwan committed to indigenous issues. Advances in public policy have helped to change the landscape for Taiwan's indigenous people over the past several years.
- Cultural Performances and Presentations (11:30 am - 5:30 pm) - These performances were free for the community to experience. It was their opportunity to enjoy the color and energy of the indigenous cultures. These performances and presentations took place in the Pegasus Ballroom in the first floor of the Student Union building at the University of Central Florida.
- Cultural Exhibits (11:30 am - 5:30 pm) - The Cape Florida Ballroom, Room 316 on the third floor of the Student Union. Indigenous groups and international organizations had their own booth and exhibit area to display arts and crafts and information. This area was designated as an interactive area for the local community.
- Indigenous Film Festival (11:30 am - 5:30 pm) - Indigenous-themed films and documentaries were screened in the Sand Key Room (Room 218) on the second floor of the Student Union building. Admission was free to the public.
